Pupils and staff at Steenberg Primary School can now marvel at the beautiful designs on their once barren school walls, thanks to the work of talented artists.

The “Heart” mural and mosaic project was officially dedicated to Steenberg Primary School on Friday November 11.

The project, which transforms the school environment through visual art and design, has been a year in the making and was managed by the Ibhabhathane Pro-
ject, which is a branch of the Peter Clarke Art Centre and some of the projects were funded by businesses.

Pupils from Oaklands High School also helped with the murals and mosaics.

Liesl Hartman, principal of the Peter Clarke Centre, said the Ibhabhathane project is committed to ensuring that creative art education is accessible to as many teachers and pupils as possible.

The project was introduced to Steenberg Primary School after a teacher got involved with the Peter Clarke Art Centre’s teacher training programme.

“It wasn’t a very difficult decision to implement the project at the school because of the passion of the teacher, Nicolette Frank,” said Ms Hartman.

She said they first do research at the schools to find out about their values and spirit.

“From there we make the works of art specific to the school,” she said.

At Steenberg Primary School, some of the murals have the theme of music, which can be attri-
buted to the names of roads in Steenberg such as Symphony Way, Flute, Orchestra and Choir

Ms Frank thanked all those who were involved in the project.

“Our current context reflects a community of Steenberg which is historically disadvantaged, de- motivated and disempowered. The murals, mosaics and paintings by those from the Peter Clark Centre have enthused us with the energy that their work exudes. Their input of passion has resulted in our output of pride,” said Ms Frank.
