Operating from a corrugated iron shack in Overcome Heights for three years, Ark Angel Educare will soon be upgraded.
The educare was started by Pastor Prosper Torchere in response to the demand for pre-primary education and childcare in Overcome Heights.
Mr Torchere had a vision to build a new educare centre and in 2016 the Department of Informal Settlement granted permission to develop the small site of 596m in St Patrick Road to construct an (early childhood development) ECD centre.
Although the site belongs to the City of Cape Town, Ark Angel was permitted to build a movable structure.
Director Elke Zwicker said once completed, the daycare would have four classrooms for children aged 10 months to 6 years, an office and caretaker unit, kitchen and storeroom and sanitation facilities and there will also be a small play-area.
Ms Zwicker added that the Schooling, Education, Empowerment Developments (SEEDS) Trust and the Wood Student Foundation (WSF) have engaged jointly to plan and build this new environmentally-friendly daycare facility.
“Thanks to the generosity of various corporate and private sponsors we are able to start with the building process. The organisation is, however, not registered with a government department as it requires a suitable building. This means we are not eligible for government funding yet until the construction is completed,”said Ms Zwicker.
