South Peninsula High School were crowned champions of the Food Lovers Market Cape Argus Schools Quiz for the third consecutive year.
The group that won the finals of the general knowledge quiz won R35 000 prize money – R105 000 over the three years.
A team from Maitland High came in second place and a team from Steenberg High School claimed third place out of 120 teams.
The group were quizzed based on stories that had appeared in the Cape Argus in August.
Cape Argus editor Gasant Abarder said the hat trick for South Peninsula was well deserved.
The winning team included Huda Adams, Luqmaan Mathee, Ganeefah Schloss, Tay-yibah Sambo and Zeyad Mathee as a reserve contestant.
Coach Dana Marinus said hard work, team work and passion contributed to their win.
“The teachers as well as pupils worked very hard to do well in this wonderful competition,” said Mrs Marinus. She added that next year will be an even bigger challenge: “Winning is great but trying to maintain and defend the title will be very difficult but with the wonderful pupils we can win once again.”
Steenberg High school walked away with a R28 000 cash prize when their E team came in third place and their A team came in eighth place in the semi-finals.
Convener Riedewaan Gaffoor said the competition was tough and a lot of hard work went into preparing the teams. “We had five teams in the competition but only two went through to the finals and semi-finals. We are extremely proud of our teams for their dedication. “The money that was won will be spent on buzzer systems so our teams can practice and hopefully fare better in next year’s competition,” said Mr Gaffoor.
