Muizenberg police arrested two women after finding illegal guns at their home in Overcome Heights on Friday July 20.
Muizenberg police followed up on information about guns being kept at the house in Mountain Road and found a 9mm Tokarev semi-automatic pistol and two rounds of live ammunition during a search.
The following day, police again received information
about guns being kept at the house.
Under the command of Warrant Officer Gerald Gain, officers searched the premises and found a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a magazine and 49 rounds of live 9mm ammunition. They also found a Winchester 12 gauge pump action shotgun with 11 rounds of ammunition.
Two women residents, aged 24 and 31, will face charges relating to being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as a prohibited firearm, as one gun’s serial number had been filed off.
Further investigation revealed that the shotgun had been stolen in 2017 during a house rob-
bery.
The women appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court and have been remanded to Pollsmoor prison pending a bail application, which will be heard on Monday July 30.
Acting station cmmmander of Muizenberg SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Mzwandile Gqabi, thanked his members for their good work. “Officers work in difficult circumstances, where very often the community they serve do not appreciate what they do. In light of the ongoing conflict between gangs in the Seawinds, Hillview and surrounding areas, we strongly urge the community to provide information with regards to illegal firearms and ammunition,” said Lieutenant Colonel Gqabi.
“Any positive information received could lead to the payment of an informer’s fee to those providing such information. All information is treated with the strictest confidence,” he said.
