Greenwood Athletic were declared the overall winners of the first Morne Barns Memorial tournament, which was held at the Johnson Road sports ground in Athlone on Saturday.

The tournament was hosted by Jamestown FC and Safa Cape Town in honour of Barnes, a respected football administrator who died in 2020.

Greenwood’s success came about due to the tournament’s “points system”. Greenwood finished with 28 points; FN Rangers came in second with 22 points; and Northpine United finished third on 20 points.

Greenwood won the under-9 and under-11 divisions while it ended runner-up in the over-13 and under-17 divisions.

Their under-17 team fell just short in the “big boys” final and were beaten by Northpine United.

FN Rangers and Diadora FC also tasted success when the teams won the under-13 and under-15 divisions respectively.
