The Titans Rugby Football Club is a developing club which operates under the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).
The club undertakes to equip aspiring players with skills and techniques to compete on a professional level, and to promote interest in the sport among under-privileged youth in neighbouring communities.
The club was established in 1946 and played as Tramway in the then Western Province Rugby Board Competition. In 1992, with unification, another developing club, Lotus River Pioneers, joined in and played in the newly formed competition under the WPRFU.
In the year 2000, the playing ground that we were operating from (Fenwick Park in Diep River) was cleared for a housing complex to be built, and the members who stayed behind – some of them had dispersed and joined other clubs – eagerly still wanted to play rugby.
It was then decided that the game of rugby was ultimately the winner at the end of the day and a playing ground needed to be found to continue with the game and to recruit new talent to the club.
The club found a suitable home in Grassy Park and now operates from the Rooikrans Sports Complex. As the team developed, the members decided that the name was no longer suitable for the club, and changed it in 2003 from Tramway to Titans RFC.
As the years went on, the club struggled with sponsorships, and we decided to seek sponsorship within our local community.
With the determination of some of our executive committee members, we finally reached a big milestone in the history of the club by attracting the likes of Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers.
With the leadership of Mr AH Dhansay and Mr I Dhansay the realisation of getting a major sponsorship on board was achieved.
They decided to invest in the future of our club. A launch was held in April 2015 at LOFOB’s hall and Phillip Bam and Gert Bam had the audience eating out of the palm of their hands with their well prepared speeches.
The messages of hope, determination, motivation, etc, resonated through the hall and it showed on the faces of the members how proud they felt to be part of this momentous occasion.
Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers donated a new set of rugby jerseys to the club and the applause of the members could be heard from far and wide. What a special occasion for all the years of struggle.
We are currently competing in the Southern League of WPRFU club competition and our members are mainly from the Grassy Park, Lotus River, Parkwood, Constantia Farms, Phumlani Village, Mitchell’s Plain and Westlake.
Our development programme (mainly featured on the juniors) includes schools like Fairmount, Montague Gift Primary, Zeekoevlei High School, and Pelican Park to name but a few. Our dedicated coaches are working 24/7 in getting the juniors to a level where they are able to participate in the game with the knowledge passed down to them.
There are many challenges that still face us, but with the dedication of all the members, Titans RFC is surely a force to be reckoned with in the near future.
