The African National Congress (ANC) Southern Suburbs Parliamentary Constituency Office (SSPCO) collected dry food ingredients with other essential items and distributed it to the communities of Grassy Park, Capricorn, Parkwood, Cafda, Vrygrond, Phumlani, Masiphumelele and Westlake on Wednesday April 8 and Thursday April 9.
Businesses and organisations have been digging deep in their pockets to help the needy so they do not have to go around begging for food during the lockdown.
Advocate Hishaam Mohamed, the office’s parliamentary representative, said they would be providing food parcels to the community during this time.
“So far we have received donations from Rise, an international agency who sponsored food such as maze, cereals, rice and soya.”
Poppie Myeki, community worker for Phumlani and Riemvasmaak, said they welcomed the food as it will save the people who are confined to their shacks.
Ms Myeki said everyone was adhering to the rules of the lockdown and the children were all inside.
She said the SSPCO handed out the food on Wednesday April 8, after 3pm. “We are happy that 15 families received food packs. There are over 1 000 people at the informal settlements.”
Mr Mohamed said the ANC Constituency Office members are working closely with local businesses as well as actively consulting with the Department of Social Development who are in a
position to support additional measures that would ensure access to food.
