A group of volunteers from Love Hope Faith (LHF), a non profit company, have been feeding residents in Lavender Hill and Lotus River during lockdown.
Rayleigh van der Merwe, who spearheads the initiative, is a single parent with a passion and drive to help those who are less fortunate, especially children.
“My fellow volunteers Michael van der Ventel, Lorene Beukes, Jerome Willoughby and Johnny Papier and I provide soup or stew on a Saturday in Military Heights, Lavender Hill, and we serve porridge and fruit on a Sunday in Phumlani Village, Lotus River, to a group of 300 to 500 destitute adults and children.”
Ms Van der Merwe said having grown up with a single parent in a disadvantaged community, she know how it feels to rely on hope and faith for survival.
“As I’m working six days a week, I have limited time and resources for fund-raising and gathering support. However, I work with a committed team of volunteers to provide food in the community.”
Ms Van der Merwe is appealing to the community and businesses to help with donations such as vegetables and meat, pots and utensils as well as personal protective equipment (PPE).
“We welcome more volunteers,” she said.
