Grassy Park criminals got the shock of their lives when police closed in on them on Thursday March 10.
Suspects were greeted by a heavy police presence when Public Order Police, the Tactical Response Team and the K9 Unit held a crime prevention operation called Lockdown.
Crime hotspots were targeted and several drug dens and people were searched in Lotus River, Parkwood, New Horizon and Ottery as well as the broader Grassy Park area.
Grassy Park police Station Commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk said officers focused on crimes that heavily depended on police action and presence.
“In order to alleviate such crime it is best to remove the criminals from the community and bring them to book,” he said.
Two men, aged 31 and 57, were arrested after police searched them and found crystal meth (tik) and mandrax.
A 28-year-old man was also nabbed as he had a warrant of arrest issued to him for failing to appear in court in connection with a case of murder.
A 49-year-old man was arrested in Blackbird Avenue, Parkwood, for dealing in liquor without a licence. Police confiscated 99 litres of liquor.
Colonel Shawn Van Wyk added that police will continue clamping down on criminals.
“Police would maintain their zero tolerance approach in the combating and investigation of crime. Strengthening the partnership between the community and the police is high on the agenda as it is contributing to the redution of crime and the apprehension of perpetrators,” he said.
He also expressed his gratitude to other law enforcement agencies for their continuous involvement in the fight against crime.
“The reward system proves to be fruitful. This system allows any adult member of the community to become proactively involved in the prevention of crime.
“Criminals can be reported and a reward could be received by the reporter,” said Colonel Van Wyk.
