The family of Jordan Brown, an 11-year-old Prince George Primary School pupil who was shot and killed in an alleged gang shooting, want the man responsible for his death to be caught and prosecuted.
Jordan was at a house in Shepard Way, Lavender Hill, with his father, Cheslin Nelson, 42, on Friday September 2 at about 2pm, when both of them and another man were shot several times.
The man was hospitalised but Jordan and his father were declared dead at the scene after sustaining several gunshot wounds to the head.
Mr Nelson was allegedly the leader of the Fast Guns gang which is believed to be the reason behind the attack.
A family member of Mr Nelson, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the family are shattered by the death of Jordan who often spent weekends with his father.
“We always knew that there was a high risk of Cheslin being targeted but we didn’t expect Jordan to be killed in such a way. We didn’t expect Jordan to pay for the sins of his father, why did they have to kill him in such a way when he had nothing to do with gangs, he was just an innocent child.”
The family admitted Mr Nelson was a gang leader: “We are at peace with Cheslin’s death but not Jordan’s. The shooter could have left the child because Jordan didn’t deserve to die like that, no child deserves to die in such a way. The person responsible must be sent to prison for life.”
Community worker Howard Soetwater said the community of Lavender Hill is devastated that a child was shot and killed.
“We are sad for the family who lost a child in such a cruel way by being shot in the head.”
He added that the community is on high alert and fear retaliation shootings.
“Things are tense and people are scared to walk outside because they know this could be the start of an all-out war,” said Mr Soetwater.
The family member said the community is tense following the shooting but confirmed to Southern Mail that the shooter was affiliated to Mr Nelson’s gang. Police could not confirm this information but Steenberg police’s Colonel Murphy Papa confirmed Mr Nelson was an alleged gang leader.
Colonel Papa said double and attempted murder cases were being investigated and SAPS’ Anti-Gang Unit has been called in to assist.
“The Steenberg police are investigating a double and an attempted murder after a shooting incident at a premises in Shepherd Way, Lavender Hill, where a 42-year-old man and a 11-year-old boy was shot and fatally wounded, and another male injured,” he said.
