Metrorail is investigating the cause of a fire at the Retreat train station on Thursday April 28.
Acting spokesperson for the parastatal, Daphne Kayster said it was too soon to establish what caused the blaze, which broke out at about 8pm.
She said one motor coach of train 2501, operating between Cape Town and Retreat, was completely gutted, and a plain trailer partially damaged.
No injuries were reported.
Ms Kayster said morning peak trips on the Southern and Cape Flats lines were cancelled the following day but could not confirm whether the incident would have a long-term effect on services along the two lines or how much the damage was estimated to cost. “The extent of the damage and cost of repairs will only be confirmed once PRASA’s (The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) loss adjusters have assessed the damage,” she said.
