Grassdale High School, in Grassy Park, is having a fund-raising event, at Grassy Park civic centre on Friday August 30 and Saturday August 31, at 7.30pm.
They are staging a play called There’s a place for us, based on West Side Story – a modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tragedy, although the setting is the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s.
The play reworked the traditional love story material and translated it, in a radical, revolutionary style for a musical, to include racial strife between rival street gangs (newly-arrived Puerto Ricans and second-generation Americans from white European immigrant families).
The gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, both are vying for control of the streets.
The Jets, led by Riff, and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo, taunt one another as they move about neighbourhood streets, eventually building up to an all-out fight with devastating results.
If you want to support the school or for more information, call on 021 706 1816.
Admission is R30.
