John Alexander, manager of a Western Cape youth development project launched the project in Ward 68 with councillor Marita
Petersen, at the Coniston Park Sport and Recreation Centre, in Steenberg, on Saturday August 17.
The project, called “Life counts”, was launched in Cape Town on June 29 when ward councillors were encouraged to invest their ward allocation budgets in youth development.
The targeted youth, aged 15 and older, will be encouraged to stay in school, while bursaries
will be accessible to study further at FET colleges.
Other opportunities to empower youth through leadership camps and skills training are up and running. “We want to empower youth to become leaders, then take ownership of their communities,” said Mr Alexander.
Ms Petersen said she spent R100 000 on the youth development project for one year.
