The Retreat Library will be closed for about three months for a much needed upgrade.
The facility, which is one of the oldest in the city, will undergo a R700 000 upgrade which will include a new circulation desk and SmartCape computer area, new floor coverings and a repaint.
Security upgrades have also been included in the budget which includes a book detection system and new burglar bars.
In November last year, the library was burgled when intruders gained entry through a back window stealing a SmartCape server. The damage and theft cost ratepayers about R54 000.
Because of this, the facility has not had computer services.
Although the upgrades will only start in April, the facility will be closed from the Easter weekend, from Thursday March 24, and will hopefully be reopened in July.
Residents are encouraged to use surrounding libraries including Grassy Park, Southfield and Muizenberg.
Belinda Walker, Mayco member for community services and special projects, said the upgrade will go a long way to provide improved services to residents.”The upgrade is part of the Library and Information Services proactive maintenance cycle whereby a number of libraries have the opportunity to create changes or upgrade the facility according to the available funding.
Each library is assessed according to what is needed to create a better library, including the creation of better flow, space and security,” said Ms Walker.
She said the City will make every effort to ensure that the upgrade is completed by the specified time given.
“We thank the community for their patience over this time, with the knowledge that a much improved library will be the result. These facilities are there for the community’s benefit and as such we would like to see that they are appreciated and maintained to a high standard. We believe that this upgrade will result in a more comfortable and inviting place for families to read, study and use the internet,” said Ms Walker.
