Murder accused of 92-year-old victim gets sentenced to 25 years

Marius Johannes Sikoo, 39, was handed a sentence of 25 years imprisonment for murder and 15 years for aggravated robbery by the Western Cape High Court for the murder of 92-year-old Maria Cecilia Klinkenberg in Chad Road, Lake View, Retreat, in October 2018.

Branch commander Lieutenant-Colonel Murphy Papa thanked investigating officer Sergeant Nazel Dlamini for the hard work she put into the investigation and for securing the sentence.

He acknowledged a letter from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressing their admiration for the way in which Sergeant Dlamini conducted the investigation. “It is very pleasing and encouraging to know despite the challenges there still are very committed members,” he said.

* Steenberg police’s Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 27-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition in Grindel Avenue on Tuesday October 6, at 4.45am.

When the officers approached a group of men in a marked vehicle, they began to run off.

Officers gave chase and caught one suspect.

Steenberg police station spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said the man had a 9mm pistol with 17 rounds of ammunition in his possession.

He appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday October 9.
